‘CCC 図 ZU – Mapping Urban Layers’ is a transdisciplinary project that brings together artists, urban residents, and experts from Hamburg and Osaka for a multi-year exchange on urban perception, sound, texture, and artistic intervention. In its first season in Osaka, CCC 図 ZU kicksoff with a sound walk, hosted by Japanese-German duo ‘此＿’ (Kono), founded by Osaka-based musician Flagio and Hamburg-based Lukas Kannemann.
The duo takes participants from Hamburg and Osaka on a walk through the streets of Osaka, with ears open to the secret beauty of the city’s whispers and roars.
While in everyday life, the city’s noise is often experienced as a discordant cacophony, this walk encourages listening differently and perceiving single sounds detached from their sources and the environment and focus on their inherent musical or rhythmic qualities. This practice allows for a fresh individual experience of the urban space beyond habitual behaviour.
After meeting up at Tennoji Station and a short introduction, the group sets out for a walk, during which they are recording individual sound bits with their smartphones which later will be integral part in 此＿’s live set. The walk ends at music venue environment 0g [ zero-gauge ] where the workshop and concert take place. The sound files are transferred to a server and the musicians explain their process of using field recordings as a base for improvised music. Then, participants will have a hands-on experience with the musicians’ equipment, exploring the possibilities of musical improvisation, using a selection from their own recordings. Those sounds will also be spontaneously integrated in the improvised composition played at the concert.
After a break and soundcheck doors of the venue will be open to the public for the concert of 此＿.
